“A man is known by the company he keeps”
The quote above is attributed to the great Greek philosopher Aesop. While the statement is over 2,500 years old; it is still appropriate.
This statement became personal to me in early November when I attended the Site Selector’s Guild Fall Forum in Dallas. This group is the only association of the world’s foremost professional site selection consultants. Founded in 2010, the Site Selectors Guild is dedicated to advancing the profession of international corporate site selection by promoting integrity, objectivity, and professional development. Guild membership is the highest standard in the site selection industry.
The Wichita Falls Chamber is an active member of this organization because of its impact on our recruitment strategy. We’ve always said that successful economic development is dependent on obtaining AND maintaining relationships. Site Selectors Guild allows us to fulfill that mission.

David Leezer, Denise Mott, and Mike Mullis of J.M. Mullis, Inc. at the Site Selector Guild conference. November 2021
During a table talk discussion at the event, Mike Mullis, President & CEO of J.M. Mulls, Inc; posed the following challenge to economic developers at my table:
“Describe economic development in one word?”
After several guesses from the table, Mike gave his insight. The word is… “PERCEPTION.”
He pointed out that how you are perceived impacts a project. A company already has a preconceived notion – both good and bad – about a state, city, and/or region. The economic developer’s job is to make sure the site consultant knows the facts about their region. In turn, the consultant can use the facts presented to enhance or refute the perception their client has.
That made me also realize that the perception of Wichita Falls has been enhanced and strengthened because we associate with groups like Site Selectors Guild and Team Texas.
So, if you want to judge Wichita Falls by the company that we keep…go ahead, we wear it as a badge of honor.
